Do we have bright lights at our coastal dunes? Project Emc2 about white crowberry ‘Camarinha’- Corema album (L.) D. Don: from environmental education initiatives to conservation actions about this endemic plant with small fruits of great potential

White crowberry - Corema album (L.) D. Don - is a plant belonging to the Ericaceae family, which is described in the Iberian Flora. The genus Corema (L.) has only two species, C. conradii (Torr.) Torr. ex Loud., which is endemic to the Northwest coast of the United States of America; and C. album (L.) D. Don, which is endemic to the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. In the Azores, there is the subspecies C. album (L.) D. Don: - C. album subsp. azoricum Pinto da Silva. In order to promote awareness raising about this shrub and its small fruits, with unique characteristics, concerning both their taste - slightly acidic, and their color – white; the educational project Emc2 was implemented since 2016, being currently financed by the Strategic Plan MARE- FCT UID/MAR/04292/2020. In this project, in addition to initiatives to awareness raising about this species, some hands on activities are also being developed for the recovery of populations that are in decline, which are described in this Lecture
